The role of a sponsor is to set a good Catholic example and encourage you in your faith journey. It is not an honorary title. Sponsors serve a special role and must be selected carefully. It should be someone who lives their faith in accord with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
According to Canon Law, a sponsor:
must be fully initiated in the Roman Catholic Church (receive the Sacrament of Baptism, Eucharist, & Confirmation)
must be at least 16 years of age
cannot be the parent
cannot be bound by any canonical penalty. For example, if they are married, they need to have been married in the Catholic Church or had a dispensation to get married outside the Catholic Church. They also cannot be cohabitating unless married.
must attend Mass on weekends and Holy Days of Obligations, and regularly receive the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Reconciliation. This also means they are registered and active in a parish.
Attendance at the weekly sessions and participation in the various rites throughout the season are a requirement of all sponsors.
This year's sessions will be each Sunday from September 7 - April 4. OCIA: 9:30 - 11:30 am.
